Wangtianshu Canopy Walk Xishuangbanna: Is It Worth It, Tickets & a Day in Mengla
Wangtianshu is the most hardcore stop on the Banna route, and the one I'm most often asked "is it worth driving that far for." It sits about 15 km northeast of Mengla county town, and it takes its name from the dipterocarp giants that grow dozens of metres tall. The headline attraction is a canopy walkway strung at the height of the tree crowns: you step onto a narrow deck tens of metres above the ground, with the roof of the rainforest spread out beneath you.
Here's the verdict up front: if you like rainforest, aren't afraid of heights, and are willing to drive an hour further, yes, it's worth it. If you're afraid of heights, travelling with very small children, or only have two days in Banna, put the time into the botanical garden instead — better value.
This guide covers how tickets and combination passes work, whether the walkway justifies the price, whether you can do it with a fear of heights, how to fit in the Nanla River boat trip, and whether to sleep in Mengla.
🌳 What Wangtianshu is
- Location: about 15 km northeast of Mengla county town, Xishuangbanna
- Core: stands of Wangtianshu (giant dipterocarp) trees, tropical rainforest, and the elevated canopy walkway
- Also here: the Nanla River boat trip, the Philip Trail rainforest walk, and an internal shuttle
- Recommended time: around 5–6 hours for the full experience — done properly it's a whole day
- Suits: people who like nature, walking, and a bit of physical effort
The distinction from the botanical garden is clear: the garden is "a tidily organised encyclopaedia of tropical plants," Wangtianshu is "the rainforest itself." The former is easy, photogenic and good with kids; the latter is wilder, harder work, and more of a thrill.
🎫 Tickets and passes (confirm on official channels for the current year)
- Admission: about ¥75 per person
- Canopy walkway: not included in admission — paid separately, roughly ¥120 per person
- Combination ticket: admission + one-way boat + shuttle + canopy walkway, about ¥180 per person (combinations vary slightly by platform)
- Boat: the Nanla River trip is another main element, available alone or inside the combination
My advice: buy the combination. Buying separately is usually more expensive, and the combination covers the boat and shuttle so the route flows. Only buy admission alone if you've decided against both the walkway and the boat and just want the rainforest trail.
🌉 Is the canopy walkway worth the money
This is the key question, so here's a straight answer.
The case for it:
- Walking on top of a rainforest is something only a handful of places in China can offer
- The height delivers a visual impact no photograph reproduces: you see the whole canopy layer
- There is proper safety equipment and supervision; it isn't a homemade operation
What to weigh:
- If you're afraid of heights it will be miserable. The walkway is narrow, it moves, and there's nothing beneath you. A serious fear of heights means skip it — don't force yourself
- It's a paid extra, and not a cheap one
- At busy times you queue, and being hurried while you're nervous makes it worse
- Bad weather (high wind, thunderstorms) can close it temporarily
My honest view: it's expensive, but the uniqueness matches the price. If this is your one trip to Banna and heights don't bother you, I lean towards doing it. If a glass walkway in Sichuan once left you frozen halfway across, don't put yourself through it.
🗺️ How to spend the day
- Night before: stay in Mengla county town (strongly recommended — it removes an early-morning drive)
- Arrive at the park before 08:30
- Morning: Nanla River boat trip (a water-level view of the rainforest, cool, ideal early)
- Midday: simple lunch inside the park
- Afternoon: rainforest walk (Philip Trail) → canopy walkway
- 16:30–17:00: leave
Why put the walkway last? Mornings tend to be hazy with flat light; by afternoon the forest opens up. And finishing on the walkway means you don't have to walk anything else afterwards on tired legs.
🚗 Getting there
- Self-drive: Jinghong → Mengla, over 150 km, about 2.5–3 hours; Mengla town → the park, about 15 km
- Stay in Mengla: what almost everyone does, and it noticeably improves the day
- Private car / day tour: a same-day return from Jinghong is very rushed (three hours each way) and I don't recommend it
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Assuming the walkway is included, then finding out it costs over a hundred extra
- Going up despite a fear of heights and getting stuck halfway
- Doing a day trip from Jinghong — six hours of driving eats the visit
- Wearing sandals on the rainforest trail — slippery, buggy, uneven
- No repellent, no sunscreen — you need both in there
- Arriving late in the afternoon — queues plus the trail won't fit
- Pushing on in heavy rain — some elements close in bad weather; ask before you set out
🧭 Choosing between the rainforest stops
- Want "organised tropical plants," easy with kids: the botanical garden. See Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden
- Want "real rainforest plus a high-level experience," and can handle the effort: Wangtianshu
- Want a shot at wild elephants: Wild Elephant Valley
- Want Dai village life: Dai Ethnic Garden
- Overall pacing: Xishuangbanna Tropical Rainforest Guide
A few closing thoughts
I've walked that canopy three times and it felt different each time. The strongest was stopping halfway and looking down: the whole canopy spread out below, wind rising through the forest, the deck shifting slightly underfoot — and the sudden, very physical realisation that you normally look at rainforest from underneath, and this time it's reversed. That inversion of viewpoint is what you're actually paying for.
I've also watched someone stand at the entrance for ten minutes and finally say, red-faced, "never mind." Fear of heights isn't negotiable, and forcing it ruins the whole day.
So my advice is always the same: assess your fear of heights honestly before you buy the walkway ticket. If you buy it, sleep in Mengla the night before, arrive by 08:30, boat first, walkway second. If you don't, the river trip plus the rainforest walk is still a very good half day — you're not missing out on everything.
