Tengchong Volcano Geopark: Craters, the Hot Air Balloon & How to Link the Three Zones
The Tengchong volcano geopark is, in my view, one of the most underrated stops in Yunnan. Plenty of visitors remember Tengchong only for Heshun old town and the Rehai hot springs and treat the volcanoes as a drive-by, spending an hour at the big crater and moving on. In fact this volcanic field is among the largest in China, and it packages several completely different things together: climbing a crater rim, standing in front of columnar jointing, walking the Black Fish River gorge, and riding a hot air balloon. Each is worth seeing alone; strung together they make a full day.
It does have one very practical problem: the areas are not next to each other. The big and small craters are in one place, the columnar jointing and Black Fish River in another, with real distance between them. Travellers who don't realise this either run out of time or find themselves stranded without a car.
This guide covers how the ticket works, how to link the zones, whether the balloon is worth it and when it stops flying, and how to sequence the day.
🌋 What's actually in the park
- Big Crater / Small Crater: the core cones. Small Crater is actually wider than Big Crater (roughly 150 m across) but lower, which is why it's called "small" — you can climb to the rim and look down into a crater like the bottom of a pot
- Volcano museum: explains how Tengchong's volcanoes and geothermal systems formed; a good primer before you climb anything, especially with children
- Columnar jointing: regular stone columns formed as lava cooled. Geologically rare and visually striking
- Black Fish River: a gorge and underground river outlet formed by lava flows, with clear water and welcome cool in summer
- Hot air balloon: a separately priced ride offering an aerial view of the volcanic field
🎫 Tickets and hours (confirm on official channels for the current year)
- Admission: a few dozen yuan per person, one ticket covering the main areas above
- Important: keep your ticket on you — staff check tickets at the columnar jointing and Black Fish River sections
- Hot air balloon: charged separately and considerably more than admission (check posted prices)
- Hours: about 08:00–18:00, last entry 17:00
- Recommended time: a full day done properly; two to three hours if you only climb the craters
🎈 Is the balloon worth it
The most common question, so here's an unhedged answer.
The case for: seeing the cones from the air is the only way to understand the landscape — a scattering of round depressions across the ground. It's a viewpoint you can't buy anywhere else.
What to weigh:
- It depends entirely on weather. Wind, rain and the rainy season ground it often, and nothing is guaranteed
- It isn't cheap, and the flight itself is short
- Anyone afraid of heights will have a bad time
- In peak season the queue can be longer than the flight
My advice: don't build a whole day around the balloon. Treat it as a bonus — if the weather holds, fly; if not, carry on with the geology. Schedule the volcano park for your second or third day in Tengchong so a grounded balloon can be retried later.
🚗 Linking the zones: why a car with a driver beats self-driving
- Self-drive: it's easy enough from Tengchong town, but parking is tight in peak season and moving the car between areas is tedious
- Car with a driver: the least friction. A local driver knows the order that works and saves you the finding-and-parking time
- Public transport: infrequent and slow — not recommended
Suggested route: volcano museum (primer) → Big and Small Craters (climb a rim) → columnar jointing → Black Fish River (finish somewhere cool). That runs from knowledge to landform to gorge, and the physical effort declines as the day goes on.
⏰ When to go
- Season: Tengchong works year-round, but the dry season (November–April) has the most stable weather and the best chance of the balloon flying
- Rainy season (roughly May–October): more rain and mist, so balloon cancellations are common — but the Black Fish River runs high and the greenery is at its best
- Time of day: leave early; wind and showers tend to arrive in the afternoon. Aim to be in the park by 09:00
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Losing the ticket and getting stopped at Black Fish River — pay again or turn back
- Assuming the areas are adjacent and only managing one all day
- Coming specifically for the balloon and falling apart when it's grounded
- Entering in the afternoon — last entry is 17:00, so you lose a chunk of the day
- Climbing the crater in sandals — the steps are loose scree; trainers are much safer
- No sun protection — there's almost no shade on the cones
- Mixing this up with Rehai — that's a separate geothermal hot spring area
🧭 Fitting Tengchong together
- Volcano park: a full day (geology + balloon + Black Fish River)
- Heshun old town and hot springs: another day — see Tengchong Hot Springs & Heshun
- Jade shopping: half a day — see Tengchong Jade Guide
- War memorial and the Western Yunnan Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall: half a day, easy to pair with the volcanoes (volcanoes in the morning, memorial in the afternoon, or the reverse)
And seriously consider hiring a car for the volcano day: shuttling between three areas, parking, finding your way and sitting in traffic can swallow one to two hours. Hand that to a driver who knows the roads and you'll see one more sight and get back without being too tired to move.
A few closing thoughts
What stays with me here isn't one single viewpoint but the feeling of the ground being opened up for inspection. Standing on the rim of Small Crater looking down, you get a very concrete sense that the ground under your feet once actually erupted. The columnar jointing is stranger still: regular stone columns that look stacked by hand but were cracked out by cooling lava.
These aren't photogenic in the way an old town is, but they lodge in the memory. Families with children should make time for it — interest in volcanoes and geology tends to get switched on in places like this, more effectively than ten pages of a textbook.
Two final reminders: don't lose your ticket, and don't bet on the balloon. Get those two right and the day mostly runs itself.
