• Route A (nature lover): Stone Forest in the morning → Dianchi Haigeng Dam for sunset in the afternoon → mushroom hotpot in Nanping Street at night
• Route B (culture lover): Green Lake Park → Yunnan Military Academy → Kunming Old Street → Golden Horse & Jade Rooster Archway → Dianchi Haigeng Dam sunset

🚌 Route A: Stone Forest + Dianchi (the classic day trip)

Morning: Stone Forest Scenic Area (9:00-14:00)

Ticket: 130 RMB (electric shuttle inside costs an extra 25 RMB) | Transfer: about 90 km from downtown Kunming, 1.5 hours by car or tourist bus

The Stone Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site — the textbook example of karst landscape. The core is the Major and Minor Stone Forests. Suggested visiting route:

Visitor center → shuttle → Major Stone Forest (Sword Peak Pool, Wangfeng Pavilion) → walk → Minor Stone Forest (Ashima Rock) → shuttle return

• Major Stone Forest: Stone pillars as dense as a forest; climb to Wangfeng Pavilion, the highest point, for a panorama of the stone sea — a prime photo spot
• Minor Stone Forest: more open; the famous Ashima Rock is here, at its best in the late-afternoon light

Getting there:

• Self-drive / rental car: set navigation to "Stone Forest Scenic Area", all expressway, most flexible
• High-speed rail: Kunming South Station → Shilin West Station, about 20 minutes (35 RMB), then a 15-minute taxi to the scenic area
• Group day tour: round-trip from downtown with tickets, about 200-260 RMB/person, for those who don't want to think

⚠️ Note: There are many "freelance guides" soliciting at the entrance — hire the official guide at the visitor center. We recommend buying the shuttle ticket; walking from Major to Minor Stone Forest takes 40+ minutes.

Afternoon: Dianchi Haigeng Dam (15:30-18:30)

Ticket: Free | Location: Kunming Dianchi National Resort, next to Haigeng Park

After returning from the Stone Forest, head straight for Haigeng Dam — the best spot in Kunming to view Dianchi Lake and the winter home base of the red-billed gulls.

• November to March: Tens of thousands of red-billed gulls fly in from Siberia to spend the winter; feeding and photographing them is Kunming's signature winter scene (breadcrumbs cost 5-10 RMB a bag, sold on site)
• Other seasons: The dam is still worth it — the vast water of Dianchi with the Sleeping Beauty silhouette of Xishan Mountain, especially beautiful at sunset
• Sunset spot: Walk toward the Xishan end of the dam; light is softest between 17:00-19:00, ideal for backlit silhouettes

Optional add-on: If you still have energy, take the Xishan Longmen cable car (about 100 RMB round trip) up the mountain in the evening for a panorama of Dianchi and Kunming's night lights.

Evening: Nanping Street / Xiangyun Food City

Kunming's old commercial heart — a dinner of wild mushroom hotpot or crossing-the-bridge rice noodles closes the day perfectly.

🚶 Route B: Green Lake + Old Street + Dianchi (slow cultural tour)

Morning: Green Lake Park (9:00-11:30)

Ticket: Free | Location: Central Kunming, Green Lake Station on Metro Line 3

Kunming's "urban living room" — where locals stroll, play chess and practice square dancing. There are red-billed gulls here in winter too. Right next door, the Yunnan Military Academy (free, closed Mondays) is worth a visit — this yellow old building was the alma mater of Zhu De and Ye Jianying, and the architecture is highly photogenic.

Noon: Kunming Old Street (11:30-13:00)

Walk 15 minutes from Green Lake to Kunming Old Street (Zhengyi Lane, Guanghua Street area). This street preserves a large number of "seal-print" style old houses from the Republican era. For lunch, get a proper bowl of small-pot rice noodles (xiao guo mixian) at Jianxinyuan or Duanshi Xiaoguo — 20-30 RMB per person.

Afternoon: Golden Horse & Jade Rooster Archway → Dianchi Haigeng Dam (13:00-18:00)

The Golden Horse & Jade Rooster Archway is Kunming's city landmark (free, right next to Nanping Street). After a quick photo stop, take a taxi or metro+bus to Haigeng Dam for the sunset (about 40 minutes). If time allows, first visit the Yunnan Provincial Museum (free, reservation required) to see the Bronze Age Dian Kingdom relics — the "Seal of the King of Dian" is Yunnan's most treasured artifact.
