Kunming to Dali & Lijiang Road Trip Guide: Highways, Distance, and 2-3 Day Itineraries

"How far is it really from Kunming to Dali and Lijiang? Which highway do I take? Should I stay overnight in between?" — This is the first question every traveler driving from Kunming into northwest Yunnan asks. Here are the answers upfront:

• Kunming → Dali: Take the G56 Hangrui Expressway (Kunchu-Dali section), about 330 km, a pure driving time of 4-4.5 hours
• Dali → Lijiang: Take the G5611 Dali-Lijiang Expressway, about 180 km, a pure driving time of 2.5 hours
• Full route: about 510 km in total — doable in one day, but we strongly recommend splitting it into 2 days so you can also enjoy Chuxiong and the east shore of Erhai Lake

This is the smoothest and most stress-free road trip section in Yunnan: all expressway, frequent service areas, no tricky mountain roads — even first-time drivers will find it easy. Below, every section is laid out: how to drive it, how much it costs, and where to stop.

🗺️ Route Overview: Two Expressways, One Line

Kunming →（G56 Kunchu-Dali Expressway 330km）→ Dali →（G5611 Dali-Lijiang Expressway 180km）→ Lijiang

Almost the entire route is expressway, with only a short urban section before entering the Dali Old Town and Lijiang Old Town. Tolls for the full trip cost about 170-200 RMB (9.5% off with ETC). On the standard "Kunming-Chuxiong-Dali-Lijiang" line you won't hit heavy tunnel clusters, so driving difficulty is low.

⚠️ Note: Don't let the navigation take you on the "old G214 road from Dali to Lijiang" — the old road crosses the Cangshan Mountains with heavy traffic and sharp bends. Unless you specifically want to visit Shaxi Old Town (you can exit at the Diannan interchange on the old road), the expressway is the right choice.

🛣️ Section by Section: Real Road Conditions

Section 1: Kunming → Chuxiong (about 160 km, 1.5-2 hours)

Leave Kunming on the Kunchu Expressway, a two-way four-lane road with a speed limit of 100-120. You'll pass through the Bijiguan Tunnel, the busiest point of the whole trip — expect slow traffic around 8 AM during the morning rush, so leave before 7 AM if possible.

• ⛽ Service areas: Konglongshan (Dinosaur Mountain) Service Area (where you can see the World Dinosaur Valley) and Lufeng Service Area — both large stops with full fuel options

Section 2: Chuxiong → Dali (about 170 km, 2-2.5 hours)

After Chuxiong, continue on the Chuda Expressway. This section crosses the Hongyanpo and Jiudingshan tunnel clusters, with noticeably more curves, but it remains all expressway. The Jiudingshan tunnel cluster is the most fog-prone section of the entire route — when visibility is poor on winter mornings, turn on your low beams and slow to under 80 km/h.

• ⛽ Service areas: Yunnanyi Service Area (named after the famous old posting station) and Shaqiao Service Area
• 📸 Highlight: as you approach Dali, you'll see the full panorama of the Cangshan Mountains' 19 peaks from the left side of the highway; on clear days the cloud belts wrap around the peaks — perfect for the passenger to snap photos

Section 3: Dali → Lijiang (about 180 km, 2.5 hours)

After leaving Dali, turn onto the Dali-Lijiang Expressway. This road runs north along the east shore of Erhai Lake and the Binchuan basin on brand-new pavement with a 110 km/h limit. The Xiaguan to Shuanglang section is the scenic highlight of the entire trip — the expressway threads between Erhai Lake and the Cangshan Mountains, water on one side, mountains on the other.

• ⛽ Service areas: Shuanglang Service Area, Jianchuan Service Area
• 📸 Highlight: the Dali-Lijiang Expressway has several scenic stretches; near Shuanglang is the best spot for overlooking Erhai Lake, but you can't stop on the highway for photos — pull over at a service area instead

📅 Two Itinerary Options

Option A: 2 Days, 2 Nights (compact, for weekend-only travelers)

• ✅ Pros: Maximum use of time
• ❌ Cons: The Dali leg is heavily compressed — Erhai Lake and Cangshan are basically a choose-one situation

Option B: 3 Days, 2 Nights (recommended — get real value out of the drive)

• ✅ Pros: Turns "driving" into "sightseeing" — neither Chuxiong nor the east shore of Erhai is missed
• ❌ Cons: One extra night, roughly 300-500 RMB more

🚙 Rental Car and Vehicle Advice

Rental advice: 90% of this route is expressway, so a regular sedan is more than enough. Kunming rental prices run about 200-350 RMB/day (sedan) in the May-August high season — booking more than a week ahead makes a clear difference. Remember to take photos of the car when you pick it up, focusing on scratches and the odometer.

⛽ Fuel and Budget

Fuel: Service areas are frequent along the whole line, so you never have to worry about running dry. Fill up before leaving the expressway at Chuxiong and Dali; gas stations around Lijiang Old Town have long queues, so top up at the Lijiang Service Area before entering town.

• Drivable year-round: Northwest Yunnan has no road-closure season — that's its biggest advantage
• March-April: Cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers in Dali, the most beautiful time around Erhai
• July-August: Rainy season; the Jiudingshan tunnel cluster and east shore of Erhai are prone to showers — slow down on wet expressway
• November-December: The snow line on Cangshan drops; you can see snow-capped peaks from the highway; watch for fog in the early morning

Driving tips:

• Speed limit is 100-120 on the expressway; watch for section speed cameras — Yunnan enforces speeding strictly
• Don't drive at night in the rainy season; visibility is poor on the east-shore mountain roads and tunnel clusters
• The whole trip is about 510 km — don't drive fatigued, rest 15 minutes at a service area every 2 hours

• Parking in the Old Towns: Motor vehicles are banned inside both Dali Old Town and Lijiang Old Town. Park at the lots outside (at the south gate and east gate), then walk or take the shuttle in. Spaces are tight in high season — ask your guesthouse owner for parking directions in advance
• ETC: ETC is widely used on Yunnan expressways; rent a car with ETC to skip the queues
• Restrictions: Some areas of downtown Kunming have rush-hour restrictions on weekdays; confirm before driving into the city
