Yamdrok Lake (Yamzho Yumco) Loop Self-Driving Guide
Yamdrok Lake, or Yamzho Yumco, is one of Tibet's three sacred lakes, with a blue so vivid it seems unreal. Most people glance from the Gambala Pass viewpoint and leave, but a loop drive reveals the lake's most enchanting angles.
This guide covers the loop route and viewpoints.
🏞️ About Yamdrok Lake
- Location: Shannan Prefecture, about 100 km south of Lhasa
- Elevation: ~4,400 m
- Highlights: a long, winding sacred lake whose blue shifts with the light
- Sights: lakeside pastures, villages, snow reflections, islets
🗺️ Loop Route
Classic loop: after descending from Gambala Pass to the lakeshore, drive along the south or north shore, linking villages and viewpoints.
Recommended route:
- Gambala Pass viewpoint (overlook the whole lake — the first sight is the most stunning)
- Descend to the shore → lakeside pasture/villages (close-up water, cattle, sheep)
- Loop along the lake toward Langkazi / Ritse Temple (south shore)
- Ritse Temple: a temple on a lake islet — a must on the loop
Note: some loop sections are dirt/village roads; unpaved, need SUV and care; or drive the paved lake-viewing route instead.
📷 Best Viewpoints & Timing
- Gambala Pass: overlook the whole lake, classic spot; good front light in the morning
- Close to shore: transparent water, reflection shots
- Ritse Temple islet: view the lake back from the islet
- Time: before 10 AM / after 3 PM soft light and bluest water; harsh at midday
- On clear days the lake is azure; overcast looks grey — pick a sunny day
🚗 Transport & Driving Tips
- From Lhasa: about 2 hours to Gambala Pass; a day trip is feasible
- Lakeside sections have curves and high altitude; control speed
- Signal may be weak along the lake; download offline maps
📌 Practical Tips
- High altitude (~4,400 m); move slowly, prevent altitude sickness
- Windy lakeside; bring a jacket
- Respect Tibetan beliefs; don't throw things into the lake
- Watch your step near the shore; don't trample wetland
- Ritse Temple and some viewpoints charge or require transfer, per on-site policy
Yamdrok's beauty deserves a full loop. Don't just stop at the viewpoint — drive around to see those blues hidden along the shore, and you've truly "explored Yamdrok."
