Summary: Bifengxia packs the Ya'an base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, a forested gorge and a wildlife park into one scenic area. This guide explains which ticket combination makes sense, when to see the pandas, how long the gorge boardwalk takes, whether the zoo is worth the extra fee, and how to handle Ya'an's rain.

Bifengxia Ya'an: Panda Base, Gorge & Zoo in One Day Without Rushing

Bifengxia is a place I happily recommend to families, for a simple reason: one ticket area holds three things — the Ya'an base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, a forested gorge, and a wildlife park. Children see pandas, adults walk a gorge, nobody loses out. And it is only two hours from Chengdu, far less effort than driving into the high mountains.

It does have one classic trap, though. Plenty of visitors assume one ticket means they can wander freely, spend two hours in the gorge, and then find the pandas fast asleep and the zoo closed. Bifengxia's ticket structure is a little convoluted and the walking route is long — without a plan, the day turns into "we saw the beginning of everything."

This guide covers which ticket to buy, when to see the pandas, how long the gorge takes, whether the zoo is worth the surcharge, and how to deal with the fact that Ya'an is one of the rainiest places in Sichuan.

🗺️ First, the three parts of Bifengxia

1. The panda base (Ya'an base) The Ya'an Bifengxia base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda opened at the end of 2003 and houses dozens of pandas. It belongs to the same system as the Chengdu, Wolong and Dujiangyan bases and carries real breeding and research work. Visitors watch from the public route behind barriers, as at any other base.

2. The ecological gorge The name Bifengxia comes from the gorge itself. Two cliff walls hold a stream between them, with a boardwalk running along the rock face past waterfalls, deep pools, hanging-coffin remains, and a lift built against the cliff. This is the walking part, and your legs will feel it afterwards.

3. The wildlife park A separately ticketed zone with a drive-through predator section and walk-through enclosures. Good with children.

🎫 Which ticket makes sense

Bifengxia's tickets are fairly granular. The structure usually looks like this (check official channels for current prices):

  • Scenic area ticket (includes the panda base): around ¥100 per person, with a small discount if you book online a day ahead
  • Wildlife park ticket: charged separately and noticeably more expensive, roughly ¥180 per person
  • Shuttle and lift: the scenic ticket usually covers the shuttle from the visitor centre to the park entrance and the gorge lift — check the ticket page for what's included
  • Internal buggy: the panda base has its own paid buggy linking zones such as the returnees' area, the nursery and Baixiongping

My recommendations:

  • Pandas plus gorge only: buy the scenic ticket, skip the zoo
  • With children and a full day: add the zoo, but accept that Bifengxia is the whole day
  • Always book online the day before: same-day tickets cost more and you may queue at peak times

⏰ How to sequence the day: get the order wrong and you lose the pandas

This is the most important section of the guide. The correct order is: pandas first, gorge second, zoo last (if at all).

  • 08:00 depart Chengdu (Chengdu–Ya'an Expressway, about 150 km)
  • 10:00 arrive at the visitor centre, transfer to the shuttle
  • 10:20–11:40 pandas first: the morning feeding window is when they move, and the cub area is liveliest
  • 12:00 lunch inside the park or near the exit
  • 13:00–15:30 the gorge boardwalk: on foot throughout, two to three hours at an easy pace
  • 15:30–17:00 zoo if you added it; otherwise head back
  • 18:00 back in Ya'an city, or 20:00 in Chengdu

Why not the other way round? Because pandas sleep after midday. Walk the gorge in the morning and you arrive at the enclosures exhausted at noon, faced with a row of backs.

🥾 The gorge: budget your legs in advance

The boardwalk is mostly steps and slopes. Walking one way and taking the lift back (or the reverse) is tiring but manageable for anyone of average fitness.

  • Time: 2–3 hours with photos, 1.5 hours at a brisk pace
  • Surface: wet is the default. Ya'an is famous as the "rain city", the cliffs seep, and the boardwalk is damp year-round
  • Footwear: non-slip trainers or hiking shoes are essential — no sandals, no leather soles, no brand-new smooth soles
  • Rain gear: a light raincoat beats an umbrella (the walkway is narrow and windy)
  • Small children: preschoolers will struggle with the full route; turn back after the main waterfall section

🐼 Details at the panda base

  • Cubs are not on show all day: there are fixed display and rest periods. Arrive late and you'll find an empty enclosure, so ask staff about the day's schedule on entry
  • Zones: the base has separate areas including the returnees' area, the nursery and Baixiongping, linked by an internal buggy
  • Behaviour: no tapping glass, no shouting, no flash
  • Time: 1–1.5 hours is enough if you look properly

🚗 Getting there and what to combine

  • Self-drive: Chengdu → Chengdu–Ya'an Expressway → Ya'an → Bifengxia, about 150 km, 2–2.5 hours. Good road, heavy traffic returning at weekends
  • Train: there are fast trains from Chengdu to Ya'an; from the station take a taxi or a shuttle bus. Works fine if you don't want to drive
  • Nearby: Shangli Ancient Town, Mengding Mountain and Labahe are all in Ya'an and make an easy two-day loop

⚠️ Common pitfalls

  1. Getting the order wrong — gorge in the morning, sleeping pandas after lunch
  2. Not booking a day ahead and paying more for no reason
  3. Wrong shoes — the boardwalk is slippery and people fall every year
  4. Underestimating the walking — after the gorge your legs are done and the rest of the day suffers
  5. Assuming the zoo is included, then finding it's a separate ticket
  6. Ignoring the weather — Ya'an rains a lot, and heavy rain can change park operations

🧭 Choosing between the panda bases

A few closing thoughts

What I appreciate most about Bifengxia is that it solves the oldest problem in group travel: everyone wants something different. One parent wants to walk and look at scenery, the child wants pandas, the other parent wants an easy day. Bifengxia gives all three, two hours from Chengdu, without a painful compromise. That balance is genuinely rare among Sichuan's attractions.

But don't get greedy. Doing all three zones in one day means rushing, and you'll remember only that you walked through each one. My usual suggestion is pandas plus gorge, and save the zoo for next time — or, if you have small children, do the opposite: thirty minutes with the pandas is plenty, then give the time to the zoo and the gorge.

And yes, Ya'an really does rain. That's not a forecast issue, it's geography. Pack a light raincoat and wear shoes with deep treads. Get those two right and the day mostly takes care of itself. A wet gorge is actually more atmospheric — mist moving between the cliffs, waterfalls running full — provided you're not marching along in soaked shoes.
