Zhegu Mountain Ski Resort: Lift Tickets, Altitude Sickness & the Drive from Chengdu

If you ask where western Sichuan is best for actually playing in snow, Zhegu Mountain Nature Park is always on the list. It sits in Miyaluo Town, Li County, Aba Prefecture, built on the mountain at around 3,000 m. The ski season runs from late October to March — roughly five months — which is unusually long for a Sichuan resort. Alongside the ski runs there is a large snow park with snowmobiles, tubing, spinning rides and similar, so people who never ski can still fill a whole day.

There is one condition you have to accept: you will be above 3,000 metres. This is not a 2,000-metre city-fringe hill. Altitude, UV radiation and cold all need to be taken seriously. Among my travellers, almost everyone who thought Zhegu "wasn't worth it" was either hit by altitude or frozen stiff; those who prepared properly rate it highly.

Here is how to buy tickets, how to handle the altitude, how to drive there, and what to combine it with.

⛷️ What's actually at Zhegu Mountain

  • Location: Miyaluo Town, Li County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan
  • Altitude: roughly 3,000–4,000 m, with the main activity zone around 3,000 m
  • Season: about late October to March, some five months long
  • Runs: practice slopes, beginner pistes and an advanced run, so you can match your level
  • Snow park: tens of thousands of square metres of play area with tubing, snowmobiles, spinning rides and carousels
  • Good for: families playing in snow, first-timers on skis, intermediates sharpening technique

The biggest difference from lowland resorts near the city is snow quality and the view. High altitude gives you proper powder, and the surroundings are snow peaks and forest — skiing there feels like a different activity entirely.

🎫 Tickets and lift passes

The ticketing is fairly granular. The usual structure looks like this (all figures are indicative; check official channels for the current year):

  • Entry only: a few dozen RMB per person
  • Winter entry ticket: around ¥100 per person
  • Package (entry + ski time): around ¥200+ per person, typically including about two hours on the snow
  • Equipment rental: skis, boots and poles are charged by item, or bring your own
  • Instruction: charged by the hour; beginners should take it
  • Snow park activities: tubing, snowmobiles and similar are paid separately

My advice is blunt: if it's your first time skiing, buy the package, not just the entry ticket. Arriving at the snow field and discovering that skiing costs extra — and that the queue is long and the price higher — is the most common regret of the day. If you're bringing children purely to play in snow, entry plus individual snow-park items usually works out cheaper.

🚗 Driving from Chengdu

Route: Chengdu → Duwen Expressway → Wenchuan → Li County → Miyaluo Town → Zhegu Mountain, about 230–260 km.

  • Time: around 4 hours normally, longer in peak season or after snow
  • Road: expressway as far as Wenchuan, then national and mountain roads with many bends and some cliffside sections
  • Winter: ice on the surface is normal. Ask your rental company whether snow chains are included; if you lack mountain driving experience, hire a driver
  • Supplies: Li County town is the last proper stop — top up fuel and water there

Not driving: a two-day private car or tour from Chengdu is the least stressful option. A day trip is possible, but four hours each way plus a day in the snow means returning after dark, which is hard on children and older travellers.

🫁 At 3,000 m, don't skip these

This is the section I repeat most, because people ignore it every year.

  1. No late nights, no alcohol the night before — altitude response and fatigue are closely linked
  2. Don't sprint on arrival — walk slowly for ten minutes and let your body adjust
  3. Bring insulation and a windproof layer — it's exposed up there and wind chill far exceeds the forecast
  4. Sun protection is mandatory — UV is intense at altitude and doubles with snow reflection. Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
  5. Drink water — the air is dry, and chapped lips are the standard small misery
  6. If you have cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, ask your doctor first
  7. Don't let children run wild in the snow all day — exhaustion raises the odds of altitude trouble

Going from Chengdu (about 500 m) straight to 3,000 m in a day is a real ask. The steadier approach is to sleep one night in Li County or Gurgou at a little over 2,000 m, then go up to Zhegu the next day.

🗺️ Sample itineraries

Option 1: two days (recommended)

  • Day 1: Chengdu → Li County / Gurgou, hot spring and acclimatisation, overnight
  • Day 2: ski or play at Zhegu in the morning, return in the afternoon

Option 2: day trip (only if short on time)

  • 06:30 depart Chengdu, 10:30 arrive, play until 15:30, back in Chengdu around 20:00

Option 3: Zhegu + Bipeng Valley + Gurgou, three days

  • Day 1: Chengdu → Gurgou hot springs
  • Day 2: skiing at Zhegu
  • Day 3: Bipeng Valley snow scenery, back to Chengdu

⚠️ Common pitfalls

  1. Buying entry only, not the ski pass, then paying more and queueing on site
  2. No altitude preparation, ending the day with a headache and nausea
  3. No sunglasses — snow glare and sore eyes wreck the rest of the trip
  4. A padded cotton jacket instead of a windproof shell — the wind cuts straight through
  5. Not booking at weekends or holidays — rooms and rental gear both run short
  6. Driving without checking conditions — icy mountain roads are no place for inexperience
  7. Treating Zhegu as a quick stop on the way — it's four hours each way, so make the most of it

🧭 What to combine it with

  • Gurgou hot springs: also in Li County; skiing followed by a soak is the classic pairing. See Gurgou Hot Springs Guide
  • Bipeng Valley: Li County's other signature, known for winter ice falls and autumn colour. See Bipeng Valley Guide
  • Miyaluo: famous for autumn leaves, worth a stop in season
  • Dagu Glacier: toward Heishui, with a glacier cableway. See Dagu Glacier Self-Drive Guide

A few closing thoughts

What impresses me most about Zhegu is the length of its season. Many resorts only get going in January and are finished by February; Zhegu can have people on skis from late October and keeps going into March, which makes it unusually useful in a winter itinerary — whether you come in December or February, there is very likely snow.

Still, altitude is the variable in this trip. On the same snow field, people who acclimatised have a great day, and people who didn't are lying in the car by the afternoon. Building one night at moderate altitude into the plan does more than any piece of equipment.

If it's your first family winter in western Sichuan, I'd suggest the "Zhegu skiing + Gurgou hot spring" pairing: one active day, one quiet day, altitude rising gradually from around 2,000 m. Your body stays comfortable and the rhythm feels right. Don't schedule anything else on the ski day, and do nothing at all on the hot spring day. That is what winter is supposed to look like.
