Mount Wawu in Winter: Table Mountain Snow, Cableway, Ice Falls & What Can Go Wrong
When people in Sichuan want snow in winter, they think of Xiling Snow Mountain first and Jiuzhaigou second. But if you balance "close to Chengdu, genuinely deep snow, not unbearably crowded", I'd put Mount Wawu near the top. It sits in Hongya County, Meishan, and it is a textbook table mountain: the summit isn't a peak but an enormous flat platform, roughly 2,830 m up, which in winter gets sheeted with snow. Add rime on the cliff edges and ice falls hanging off the rock walls and you have something that doesn't look like any other snow scene in western Sichuan.
The snow season is the real argument for coming. Mount Wawu is under snow from roughly mid-November to early May — around six months of the year — which is rare at this latitude. Ice falls, ice curtains, ice columns, icicles and rime are all common features of the cold months.
It isn't an easy mountain, though. The cableway shuts in high winds, the summit runs more than ten degrees colder than Chengdu, and ice on the paths is normal. Here is how to plan around all of it.
🏔️ Why it's called a table mountain
- Location: Hongya County, Meishan City, Sichuan; a national 4A scenic area, provincial nature reserve and geopark
- Landform: flat-topped table mountain — a large plateau on top, ringed by near-vertical cliffs
- Summit altitude: about 2,830 m
- Sights: sea of clouds, sunrise, azalea seas in spring, ice falls and rime in winter, old-growth forest
- Recommended time: one day (stay overnight on the summit if you want sunrise and clouds)
The table-mountain shape creates an unusual experience: once you're on top, you stop climbing. The plateau is relatively gentle, with boardwalks across forest and meadow, so walking after snow feels like strolling across a snowfield rather than mountaineering. For families with grandparents or small children, that matters more than the absence of ski slopes.
🎫 Tickets and the cableway
- Admission: park entry and cableway are ticketed separately, with combination tickets available (check official channels for the current year)
- Cableway: getting up and down depends almost entirely on it — the cableway is the linchpin of any Wawu itinerary
- Shuttle: internal shuttles link some sections
- Opening hours: winter hours shorten; check the official notice the day before you go
One thing I stress with every guest: the cableway suspends operation in high winds, snow and icing. That is not overcaution — the summit stands near 3,000 m and safety thresholds are strict. So Wawu never goes on the day you fly out, and never as the single free day in a tight itinerary.
🚗 Driving from Chengdu
- Self-drive: Chengdu → Chengdu–Leshan / Leshan–Ya'an Expressway → Hongya → Mount Wawu, about 220–240 km, 3–3.5 hours
- Road: the expressway section is easy; the mountain road up from the exit has many bends and can ice in winter
- Private car / tour: if you don't want mountain driving, hire a car with a driver or join a day tour
- Accommodation: Hongya county town, guesthouses outside the park, or the summit Xiang'er Mountain Lodge (best for sunrise; confirm winter opening)
🗺️ A classic winter day
- 07:00 depart Chengdu
- 10:30 arrive, cableway up
- 11:00–15:00 summit plateau boardwalks, viewing platforms, ice fall areas, walking slowly
- 15:30 cableway down and drive back
- 19:00 back in Chengdu
For sunrise and sea of clouds (two days)
- Day 1: up in the afternoon, sleep on the summit or nearby
- Day 2: sunrise and clouds, down late morning This depends heavily on weather — check the forecast before committing.
❄️ Winter gear: don't economise here
I'll be pedantic, because every winter someone goes home early from the summit because they were cold.
- Top: down or heavy padded jacket plus a mid layer. It's windy up there, so a windproof shell earns its weight
- Legs: thermal layer, never single trousers
- Feet: waterproof, non-slip boots, and ice grips for snow (simple strap-on ones are sold at the mountain base). Once the boardwalk ices over, walking without them is close to impossible
- Accessories: hat, gloves and a scarf are mandatory — ears and fingers go first
- Also: sunglasses (snow glare is fierce), a thermos, a power bank (batteries die fast in the cold), a light raincoat
⚠️ Common pitfalls
- Checking the weather but not the cableway notice, then arriving to find it shut
- Wearing city shoes — the boardwalk ices and you'll slip within a few steps
- Going up in the afternoon — it gets dark early in winter and colder still on top, which compresses your time
- No sunglasses — sore eyes and washed-out photos
- Treating Wawu as a quick look — cableway queues plus summit walking genuinely fill a day
- Not booking ahead in peak season — summit accommodation is very limited and tightest in winter
🧭 Wawu or Xiling Snow Mountain
- Want to ski: Xiling has proper pistes and rental gear; Wawu is about scenery. See Xiling Snow Mountain Ski Guide
- Want that "southern snowfield" landscape: Wawu wins — the flat summit plateau and ice falls are unique to it
- Closest to Chengdu: Xiling
- With elderly relatives or children: Wawu's summit is gentle, so the walking is actually easier
- Only one day: both work as day trips; Wawu is slightly further each way
My rule: first winter in Sichuan and you want to ski as well as see snow, choose Xiling. Already skied and want something different, or travelling with older family members, choose Wawu.
A few closing thoughts
What stays with me at Wawu isn't one particular viewpoint. It's the contrast: standing on a flat, open snowfield with cliffs and cloud all around you. The plateau is large enough that half a day doesn't cover it, and when the crowds thin out the only footprints in the snow are yours, with wind coming through the trees and nothing else in the sound. That is hard to reproduce anywhere else near Sichuan's cities.
To get it, you have to clear two hurdles: weather and gear. Weather decides whether the cableway runs; gear decides how long you last up there. I've watched too many people arrive in ordinary city winter clothes, last twenty minutes on the summit, and come down saying there wasn't much to see — when the truth is they never gave themselves the means to stay.
Wawu also slots neatly into a "pandas + snow + hot springs" winter route: see pandas near Chengdu first, push on to Hongya for snow, and finish with a hot spring on the way back. Three days, two nights, no rushing.
