Sichuan's 3 Core Travel Routes: Each Worth a Week—Which to Choose for Different Needs

Sichuan is China's most underrated travel province—not because nobody knows its beauty, but because it's too big. Chengdu to Daocheng Yading is 800km, Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou is 420km—these distances cross three countries in Europe.

So the first step in planning Sichuan travel isn't booking hotels or flights—it's choosing a route. Based on your time and needs, I've split Sichuan into three core routes. Each 7-10 days, completely different styles.

🚙 Veteran's Straight Talk: Road Conditions and Vehicle Needs for Three Routes

Different routes have different vehicle requirements:

Western Sichuan Grand Loop (high altitude + mountain roads + long distances): Prado is standard—4WD + high clearance + altitude-capable power.

Jiuzhai-Huanglong Line (mountain roads + plateau but shorter drives): GL8 or Prado both work. Shorter distances, comfort first.

Basin Culture Line (city + highway + ancient town roads): GL8 most comfortable—shuttling between cities and ancient towns, space and comfort are priorities.

Experienced drivers add huge value on all three—Western Sichuan: knows which pass is safest at what time; Jiuzhai-Huanglong: knows which Songpan yak skewer shop is best; Basin: knows Leshan's Feng Sanniang qiaojiao beef needs arrival before 11 AM.

🗺️ Three Routes, Broken Down One by One

Route 1: Western Sichuan Grand Loop (7-10 Days) — Hardcore Scenery Lover

Chengdu→Siguniang Mountain→Danba→Seda→Ganzi→Litang→Daocheng Yading→Xinduqiao→Chengdu.

Who it's for: Want snow mountains and grasslands, can endure hardship, don't mind long drives. Not for small children.

Core experiences: Siguniang golden sunrise, Seda red houses sunset, Maoya Grassland wildflower sea, Daocheng Yading Milk Sea.

Biggest challenge: 2000km total, entire route at high altitude (3000-4700m), 5-8 hours daily driving. Daocheng Yading hiking is the physical peak.

Route 2: Jiuzhai-Huanglong Line (5-7 Days) — Water Wonderland Enthusiast

Chengdu→Dujiangyan→Huanglong→Jiuzhaigou→Songpan→Chengdu.

Who it's for: Want to see China's top water scenery, not seeking extreme challenges, family-friendly. Sichuan beginner's first choice.

Core experiences: Jiuzhaigou Five-Flower Lake blue-green gradient, Nuorilang Waterfall mist rainbows, Huanglong Five-Color Pools.

Biggest challenge: Huanglong altitude 3500+ may cause mild altitude sickness. Jiuzhaigou valley is all walking (30,000+ steps).

Route 3: Basin Culture Line (5-7 Days) — Food + Ancient Town Lover

Chengdu→Mount Emei→Leshan→Pingle Ancient Town→Shangli Ancient Town→Chengdu.

Who it's for: Foodies, cultural travelers, those who dislike high altitude and long drives. Elderly-friendly.

Core experiences: Leshan qiaojiao beef + bobo chicken, Mount Emei Golden Summit sea of clouds, tea and zoning out under Pingle's banyan tree, giant panda base to see Hua Hua.

Biggest challenge: No altitude sickness, no long drives, no physical extremes—biggest challenge is overeating.

💡 Heart-to-Heart Truths

Don't try to do all three routes at once: With only 5-7 days, choose the best fit. Forcing two routes into 7 days—half your time on the road, snap a photo and leave at each spot. Come back next time.

First time in Sichuan, choose Jiuzhai-Huanglong or Basin: Western Sichuan Grand Loop is for advanced players. First acclimatize on Jiuzhai-Huanglong, then challenge Western Sichuan next time.

Season determines route choice: Autumn (October) for Western Sichuan or Jiuzhai-Huanglong—best autumn colors in China. Summer (June-August) Basin is too hot—go to Western Sichuan or Jiuzhai-Huanglong to escape heat. Winter (December-February) Basin is most comfortable—Western Sichuan too cold.

📸 Don't Shoot Blindly—These Spots Are Stunning

  • Siguniang Maobiliang: Western Sichuan Loop's first stop, sunset gilds Yaomei Peak. Telephoto for peak close-up + flowing banner clouds.
  • Jiuzhaigou Five-Flower Lake: Jiuzhai-Huanglong core, morning front-lit—lake bottom visible in fine detail.
  • Leshan Giant Buddha Boat: Basin Line climax, river view of Buddha and three-river confluence.

💬 What RoamFun Travelers Say

"First Sichuan trip did Jiuzhai-Huanglong—stunned by Jiuzhaigou's water. Second time, Western Sichuan Grand Loop—Milk Sea hike made me question life—but worth it. Third time, Basin Line—eating between Leshan and ancient towns daily. Three routes over three years—new reasons to return each time." — Shanghai, Lao Wang ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Debated which route for a month. Chose Basin Line—because traveling with parents. Mount Emei cable car, Leshan food, Pingle tea houses—parents raved about everything, said it was their favorite trip." — Beijing, Xiao Li ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Which Route Doesn't Matter—What Matters Is You Came to Sichuan

Each visit to Sichuan, you only see one side—Western Sichuan's wildness, Jiuzhai-Huanglong's magic, Basin's slow pace. That's fine—you don't see just one side. Each side makes you want to return for the next.
