The "Jiuhuang Line" (Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou–Huanglong) is one of Sichuan's classic self-driving routes. Along the way, snow mountains, canyons, Qiang villages, and grassland are no less beautiful than Jiuzhaigou itself.

This guide helps you choose between the east and west routes.

🗺️ Two Main Routes

1. West route (classic, recommended)

• Chengdu → Dujiangyan → Wenchuan → Mao County → Songpan → Jiuzhaigou (~420–440 km)
• Passes Dujiangyan, Wenchuan, Diexi Lake, Songpan old town, Chuanzhusi
• Good roads, more supplies — most people's choice

2. East route

• Chengdu → Mianyang → Jiangyou → Pingwu → Jiuzhaigou (~430 km)
• Passes Mianyang, Jiangyou, Pingwu (Baima Tibetan)
• Fewer cars, more primitive scenery, but some remote sections

Generally take the west route — better roads, more sights, convenient supplies.

⏰ Itinerary (Recommended 2 Days)

Day 1: Chengdu → Dujiangyan (optional visit) → Wenchuan → Mao County → Songpan (stay or visit) Day 2: Songpan → Chuanzhusi → Jiuzhaigou scenic area

You can also go directly to Jiuzhaigou in one day (~7–8 hours), but it's tiring; two days lets you enjoy the journey.

• Dujiangyan: World Heritage, worth a stop
• Diexi Lake: a barrier lake from an earthquake, unique scenery
• Songpan old town: city walls, historic streets
• Chuanzhusi: the transit hub to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong

🛣️ Roads & Driving

• Overall good, mostly paved
• Mountain curves; control speed on winding sections
• Rainy season (Jun–Aug) watch for landslides; winter (Dec–Feb) watch for ice; check real-time roads
• Recommended SUV, bring emergency gear

🎫 Ticket Notes

• Jiuzhaigou: peak ticket + shuttle is pricey; book online early (real-name)
• Huanglong: separate ticket if combined
• Peak season (especially autumn) has visitor limits; book well ahead

📌 Practical Tips

1. Book tickets and hotels early in peak season; Jiuzhaigou lodging is tight
2. Western Sichuan elevation rises (Jiuzhaigou ~2,000–3,000 m); move slowly, prevent altitude sickness
3. Mountain weather changes fast; bring a warm jacket and rain gear
4. Fuel stations along the way; fill up whenever you see one
5. Qiang/Tibetan villages along the route are worth a short stop
