Tianshan Tianchi Day Trip: Tickets, Shuttle Bus, Routes & Tips
Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake of the Tianshan) is Xinjiang's classic "entry-level" attraction and the nearest alpine lake to Urumqi — about 1.5 hours one way from the city, a no-stress day trip. Beneath Mount Bogda, the snow peaks, pine forests and emerald water make this the perfect first stop for any first-time visitor to Xinjiang.
This guide covers tickets, shuttles and route choices so you can make the day efficient and enjoyable.
🎫 Tickets & Transport: Know Before You Go
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Entrance | approx. 95 CNY/person (peak), approx. 45 CNY off-peak |
| Shuttle | approx. 60 CNY/person (round trip), ~30 km from gate to lake |
| Hours | Peak (Apr–Oct) approx. 9:00–19:00, shorter off-peak |
| Location | 60–70 km from central Urumqi, along G216 |
| Altitude | Lake surface ~1,910 m, lower oxygen than the city |
Getting there:
- 🚗 Self-drive: G216 leads straight to the scenic parking lot, about 1.5 hrs — most flexible
- 🚌 Tourist bus: Direct buses from People's Park/Erdaoqiao in the city, about 2 hrs
- 🚕 Chartered car: Round-trip charter from the city ~500–600 CNY/day (cheap split 4 ways)
- 🚄 HSR + transfer: Urumqi Station to Fukang West in ~20 min, then taxi or local bus into the scenic area
📅 Day-Trip Route
08:00–09:30 Depart for Tianchi
Leave early — avoid tour-group rush and catch better morning light and water color.
09:30–10:30 Shuttle + transfer electric cart
Gate → 30-minute shuttle → Tianchi core area. Walk or take the electric cart (about 10 CNY) to the lakeshore.
10:30–12:00 Lakeside Loop (the main event)
Walk the lakeside boardwalk slowly, heading toward the Xiwangmu Temple for snow-peak reflections. Recommended route:
- Xiwangmu Temple: west side of the lake, ~30 min walk from the shore — the classic spot for the full lake view
- Main lake surface: photograph the lake with Mount Bogda (5,445 m) reflected in the water
- Dinghai Shenzhen: a century-old elm by the shore — the lake's landmark
12:00–13:00 Lunch
In-park restaurants are pricey and average — we recommend bringing your own food (naan, fruit, snacks) for a lakeside picnic, or grab a quick bite near the shuttle terminus.
13:00–15:00 Mayan Mountain Cable Car (optional, +1.5 hrs)
To see the lake from above, take the Mayan Mountain cable car (approx. 220 CNY/person round trip) up higher — the lake looks like a jade inlaid among the peaks. If you're fit, also walk the Feilong Pool – East Little Tianchi trail (about 1 hour) to see the waterfall.
15:00–16:30 Return downhill
Head back the same way — shuttle down is ~30 min — regroup at the parking lot and return to Urumqi by early evening.
🏔️ Which of the Three Routes to Pick?
| Route | Time | Best For | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic lakeside loop | 2–3 hrs | Most visitors | Boardwalk + Xiwangmu Temple + Dinghai Shenzhen |
| Cable car panorama | 3–4 hrs | Photographers | Classic loop + Mayan cable car overlooking the lake |
| Deep hike | 4–5 hrs | Hikers | Loop + Feilong Pool waterfall + East Little Tianchi |
Pick 1 if short on time, 2 for the full view, 3 if fit. The cable car is poor value in bad weather (cloud cover blocks the view) — check the live forecast before going up.
📸 Photo Spots
- Xiwangmu Temple side: classic — full lake view with Mount Bogda
- Southeast shore boardwalk: morning front-light, bluest water
- Mayan cable car top: overlook the whole lake, like a jade
- Feilong Pool waterfall: great in the high-water season (May–July)
🎒 Packing & Notes
- Sunscreen + sunglasses + sun hat (extreme UV at altitude)
- Light jacket (windy by the lake, 5–8°C cooler than the city)
- Comfortable non-slip shoes (the boardwalk has steps)
- Food + thermos of hot water (in-park dining is poor value)
- ID/passport (for tickets/entry)
Notes:
- Lake altitude is 1,910 m — not high, but lower oxygen; walk slowly, no running, and let seniors and kids rest
- Swimming in the lake is prohibited
- Peak season (Jul–Aug, National Day) has long queues — arrive early
- Weather changes fast — check the forecast; a cloudy/rainy day greatly reduces the experience
💰 Cost Reference (per person)

💬 What travelers who visited Tianchi with RoamFun say
"Tianchi is more beautiful than I imagined — snow peaks reflected in the lake like a painting. We arrived at 9am with few people around, walked the boardwalk slowly, had a picnic with our own food at noon, and were back in the city by 3pm. A perfect day." — Jiang Jiang, Wuhan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Strongly recommend the Mayan cable car — the view of the lake from above is a completely different experience, like a jade inlaid in the mountains. Just note it's windy at the top; wear enough layers." — Lao Xiong, Chongqing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
