Southern Xinjiang Loop Road Trip: Kashgar–Hotan–Kuqa in 8 Days

If Northern Xinjiang is "a paradise of scenery," then Southern Xinjiang is "a cathedral of culture." Kashgar's Old City, Hotan's jade bazaar, Kuqa's royal residence, the desert highway and the Tianshan Grand Canyon — the Southern Xinjiang loop strings together Uyghur culture, desert wonders and Silk Road relics in one journey.

Unlike the north, the Southern loop demands more from your ability to handle the desert highway and long-distance driving. This guide lays out the 8-day route, daily mileage, fuel stops and pitfalls so you can complete it safely.

🗺️ Route Overview: How the Southern Xinjiang Loop Works

Starting from Kashgar, the loop circles the Tarim Basin counterclockwise:

Kashgar → Shache → Hotan → Minfeng → Desert Highway → Luntai → Kuqa → Korla → Lop Nor Village → 
Yuli → Kuqa → Baicheng/Kizil Caves → Aksu → Kashgar

Total distance is about 2,800 km — roughly 350 km per day over 8 days. Southern roads are flatter than the north, but the desert highway has long straight stretches that cause driver fatigue — cap daily driving at 6 hours.

📅 Daily Itinerary (Full 8-Day Version)

Day 1: Arrive in Kashgar

Arrive in Kashgar and explore the Old City in the afternoon — maze-like alleys, earthen houses, the clang of coppersmiths. In the evening, sip brick tea at the century-old teahouse and listen to locals play the rawap. Night market: grilled pigeon and clay-pot stew.

Day 2: Kashgar → Shache → Hotan (approx. 600 km, 7 hrs)

A long day. Head south on G314 through Shache County — birthplace of Daolang culture, worth a quick stop at the Shache Old City. Arrive in Hotan by evening: watch the jade bazaar (don't buy jade if you don't know it), then dive into the Hotan night market.

Day 3: Hotan → Minfeng (approx. 300 km, 4 hrs)

In the morning, stroll Hotan's Tuancheng Old Street and try your luck picking jade along the Yurungkash River (don't go into the river during summer floods). Take G315 to Minfeng County in the afternoon. Minfeng is the southern gateway to the desert highway — fill up completely and stock water and food here.

Day 4: Minfeng → Desert Highway → Luntai (approx. 550 km, 7 hrs)

Today you cross the Taklamakan Desert Highway (Minfeng–Luntai section) — the highlight of the loop. The road is excellent, fully paved, but flanked by shifting dunes in the "Sea of Death." Stop to photograph and climb the desert viewpoints. Never drive onto the roadside sand — recovery from a stuck car is extremely costly.

• ⚠️ Note: No service areas on the desert highway — check fuel and water before departure; summer surface temps can exceed 60°C

Day 5: Luntai → Kuqa (approx. 200 km, 3 hrs)

Arrive in Kuqa, the cultural heart of Southern Xinjiang, in the morning. Explore the Kuqa Old City in the afternoon: the colorful doors of Ristan Street, Kuqa Royal Residence and the Qing Dynasty city wall. In the evening, watch meter-wide "king naan" being made at the Kuqa Big Naan City — the signature dish bigger than a washbasin.

Day 6: Kuqa → Tianshan Grand Canyon → Kizil Caves → Baicheng (approx. 200 km, 4 hrs)

Visit the Tianshan Grand Canyon in the morning — red sandstone wind-carved into a canyon where you feel like you're on Mars. Detour to the Kizil Caves in the afternoon, an earlier Buddhist cave complex than Dunhuang's Mogao; the murals are damaged but still awe-inspiring. Stay overnight in Baicheng County.

• 💡 Tip: The Grand Canyon is a ~3-hour walk; wear grippy shoes. Kizil Caves close on Mondays

Day 7: Baicheng → Aksu → Kashgar (approx. 700 km, 8 hrs)

The longest day of the trip. Follow G314 west through Aksu and continue south back to Kashgar. Long, but mostly expressway and first-class road with good rest stops. Arrive in the evening and rest.

Day 8 (Optional): Kashgar → Tashkurgan (Pamir Plateau, 1–2 days)

If you have energy, add a day for the Pamir Plateau: Baisha Lake, Karakul Lake, Mount Muztagh Ata and Tashkurgan County. You'll need a border permit obtained in Kashgar in advance. • 💡 Tip: Pamir altitude is 3,000–4,000 m; avoid strenuous activity on arrival

🚙 Vehicle & Rental Advice

Key note: The Southern loop is almost entirely paved — a normal SUV is fine. But if you plan to venture to the Taklamakan edge or wild canyon sections, get a proper 4WD. Speed enforcement is dense on the desert highway and G314 — strictly obey limits.

⛽ Fuel & Supplies Guide

Gas stations in the south are sparser than the north. Remember three key points:

• Hotan: last big city before the desert highway — full tank + water
• Minfeng: southern end of the desert highway — must depart full
• Luntai: northern end — refuel promptly after exiting the desert

Desert highway tips: No service areas, only a few lay-bys; in summer carry plenty of drinking water (at least 3 L per person per day); spring and autumn can bring sandstorms — check the weather; winter is cold and slippery — drive slowly.

🌤️ Best Season

• April–June: Southern spring — apricot blossoms (Pamir) in bloom, desert not too hot, great value
• September–October: Best season — comfortable temperatures, abundant fruit, golden poplar forests
• July–August: Extremely hot in the desert — 60°C+ surface temps on the highway during the day, tough on both people and cars

Clothing: The south is drier and dustier — sun protection (hat, sunglasses, mask) is essential; big day-night swings mean bring a jacket.

• Border permit: Required for the Pamir Plateau (Tashkurgan). Obtainable at Kashgar's Tourist Service Center with your passport/ID
• ID card: Security checks are strict in the south — you swipe your ID at gas stations, scenic areas and checkpoints, so carry it at all times
• Cultural respect: Dress modestly at mosques and markets; ask permission before photographing people (especially women)
• Desert safety: Never drive solo onto sand, never cross the desert highway at night; carry water and warm gear
• Driver fatigue: The desert highway is long and straight — rest every 2 hours
