• Afternoon: onward to Yining/Khorgas, or south to Nalati

• Day 1: Enter the lake, drive the full loop to scout locations, shoot sunset

Sayram Lake is the "western gateway" of the Ili loop. The two most common connections:

• Route A (clockwise Ili loop): Urumqi → Sayram Lake → Guozigou → Khorgas → Yining → Zhaosu/Tekes → Nalati → Duku Highway → Urumqi
• Route B (south first, loop back): Urumqi → Nalati → Zhaosu → Yining → Sayram Lake (grand finale) → Urumqi

The wind at Sayram Lake is no joke: The lakeshore is windy year-round, especially the West Shore Command Platform. Summer daytime gusts reach force 6-7. Bring a windbreaker whatever the season, and choose a hat with a chin strap.

At 2,073 m, don't dismiss the altitude: Most people feel nothing at this elevation, but running or strenuous activity will wind you. Slow down — wandering the shore at a relaxed pace is exactly right.

The lake's blue is weather-dependent: Overcast and rainy days turn Sayram Lake gray-blue. Only on clear days do you get that stunning sapphire. Check the forecast and save your sunny day for the lake.

July-August is peak season; want peace? Go in June or September: Mid-late June brings trollius blooms and fewer tourists; September means golden grass and even fewer. Families visiting in summer break must accept peak crowding — in that case, enter early to beat the crowds.
