The core idea is "start in Urumqi, go counterclockwise, and return to Urumqi" — no backtracking:

Urho Ghost City → Kuytun → Sayram Lake → Guozigou → Yining → Nalati → Duku Highway (north) → Urumqi

Total distance is around 2,600 km — about 260 km per day over 10 days, a comfortable pace. There is a hidden advantage to going counterclockwise: the Duku Highway comes on the last day, by which time you have adapted to Xinjiang's driving rhythm and altitude, so it feels more relaxed.

Day 1: Arrive in Urumqi

Pick up your rental car, complete paperwork and stock up on supplies. If time allows, visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar for water and snacks while soaking up the Western Region vibe. Rest early — you head into the mountains tomorrow.

Day 2: Urumqi → Tianshan Tianchi → Fuyun (approx. 420 km, 5 hrs)

Head straight for Tianshan Tianchi in the morning — a high-altitude lake beneath Mount Bogda, about 3 hours to explore. In the afternoon, follow G216 north through the heart of the Junggar Basin to Fuyun County, preparing for Keketuohai the next day.

Day 3: Fuyun → Keketuohai → Burqin (approx. 300 km, 4.5 hrs)

In the afternoon, cross the Altai Mountains to the fairy-tale border town of Burqin, then walk to Colorful Beach (Wucaitan) for sunset — the yardang landforms along the Irtysh glow with layered color.

Day 4: Burqin → Hemu Village (approx. 160 km, 3 hrs)

Today you enter the core Kanas scenic area. Hemu Village is one of China's most beautiful snow villages — birch forests, log cabins and the Hemu River form a picture-perfect idyll. Wander the village in the afternoon and climb to Haden Viewing Platform at dusk for chimneys and smoke, or ride a horse to Beauty Peak.

Day 5: Hemu → Kanas Lake → Baihaba → Kanas (approx. 70 km, 2 hrs)

Head into the Kanas Lake scenic area early — take a boat or hike to the Guanyu Terrace for a panoramic view. In the afternoon, visit Baihaba Village on the China–Kazakhstan border (border permits available inside the scenic area). In autumn, Baihaba turns golden and is known as "the First Village of the Northwest."

Day 6: Kanas → Burqin → Urho (approx. 360 km, 5 hrs)

Day 7: Urho → Kuytun → Sayram Lake (approx. 480 km, 6 hrs)

A longer driving day. Follow G217 south through Karamay and Kuytun, then head west on the G30 Lianhuo Expressway. Arrive at Sayram Lake around sunset. Stay inside the scenic area or at a lakeside campervan camp — the lake view the next morning is absolutely worth it.

In the afternoon, reach Yining and explore the Kazakh and Uyghur lanes of Kazanqi Folk District with its blue houses and craft shops. Dinner in Liuxing Street: roast buns with kvas.

Day 9: Yining → Nalati Grassland (approx. 250 km, 4 hrs)

Day 10: Nalati → Duku Highway (north) → Urumqi (approx. 500 km, 8 hrs)

On the final day, drive the northern section of the Duku Highway — known as "China's most beautiful road," crossing grassland, canyons, snow mountains and Gobi desert in a single day. Note the Duku Highway has seasonal opening restrictions (usually June–October, weather dependent) — confirm before you leave. Return to Urumqi in the evening, drop off the car and end the trip.

Rental advice: Over 90% of the route is paved, so a normal SUV is enough. Always photograph the car during inspection, especially the undercarriage and tires.

• Station density: Fueling is easy on Northern Xinjiang's main roads, but Hemu, Kanas and Sayram Lake scenic areas have no large gas stations — fill up before entering
