Kashgar to Pamir Plateau Day Trip: Baisha Lake, Mount Muztagh Ata & Tashkurgan
"Can I reach the Pamir Plateau and come back in a single day from Kashgar? Are Baisha Lake and Muztagh Ata on the same road?" — Among the most common questions from Southern Xinjiang travelers. The answer: absolutely. The G314 (China–Pakistan Friendship Highway / Karakoram Highway) from Kashgar to Tashkurgan is about 290 km of excellent paved road. A day trip is tight but covers all the essential sights.
This road is one of China's most beautiful highways — snow mountains, lakes, dunes and canyons alternate around every bend, and every viewpoint deserves a stop.
🛂 Before You Leave: Get Your Border Permit First!
The Pamir Plateau (toward Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County) is a border region — a border permit is mandatory.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | Kashgar Tourist Service Center (near the Old City) |
| Required docs | Original passport/ID |
| Processing time | 10–20 min, free |
| Validity | Usually 30 days |
| Hours | Mon–Sun 9:00–19:00 (may vary on holidays) |
Important: Get the permit at least one day in advance — you'll leave early on day-trip morning. Checkpoints verify the permit matches the person, so ID must match.
🚙 Day-Trip Route: Kashgar → Tashkurgan → Return
Round trip is about 580 km — at a normal pace 12–14 hours. Depart at 8:00 and return to Kashgar around 22:00.
07:30 Depart Kashgar
Head south on G314, entering the Gaizi Gorge after leaving the city. Several security checkpoints along the way — just cooperate.
09:30 Oy Tagh Red Mountains (photo stop)
The first geological wonder before the Pamir — continuous red rock like a burning mountain. A pull-off exists for a quick 10-minute shoot.
10:30 Baisha Lake (Baisha Mountain Viewpoint)
The first big highlight. The lake glows dreamy blue-green against white sand mountains behind. Colors are best on clear days — stay 40–60 minutes. Boardwalks and viewpoints at the lake; hold onto your hat, it's windy.
12:00 Karakul Lake + Mount Muztagh Ata (main stop)
Karakul Lake offers the best view of Mount Muztagh Ata (7,509 m, "Father of Ice Mountains"), its snow peak reflected in the water. Stay an hour; horseback photo rides are the usual activity. Altitude is ~3,600 m here — move slowly after getting out; no running or jumping.
13:30 Muztagh Ata Glacier Park (optional)
If time and energy allow, drive into the glacier park (ticket required). With a tight day trip, skip it — the distant view from Karakul Lake is already impressive.
14:30 Subash Pass (4,070 m)
Cross the Subash Pass, the highest point of the trip. Stop for photos — no strenuous activity; get back in the car quickly.
15:30 Arrive at Tashkurgan County
Tashkurgan is China's only Tajik autonomous county at 3,100 m. Visit the Stone City ruins (a stop on Xuanzang's pilgrimage route) and Golden Grassland (Alar National Wetland Park) — about 1.5 hours on foot. Have lunch in town.
17:00 Return to Kashgar
Retrace the route, passing Karakul Lake and Baisha Lake again with different afternoon light for extra shots. Arrive back in Kashgar around 21:30–22:00.
⏱️ Short on Time? Try the "Half-Day Lite Version"
If you can only do half the route, turn around at Karakul Lake (about 450 km round trip, ~10 hours). Baisha Lake + Karakul Lake + Muztagh Ata cover the three core sights; leave Tashkurgan and the Stone City for next time.
🏔️ Altitude Acclimatization Guide
| Location | Altitude | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kashgar | 1,300 m | No effect |
| Baisha Lake | 3,300 m | Mild discomfort for some |
| Karakul Lake | 3,600 m | Slow down, drink water |
| Subash Pass | 4,070 m | Highest point — no strenuous activity |
| Tashkurgan | 3,100 m | Stay warm if overnighting |
AMS tips: The day trip climbs fast (1,300→4,000 m). Counter-intuitively, people who don't work out much often handle it better than fitness enthusiasts. Carry glucose and chocolate, walk slowly — most people are fine. If you plan to stay overnight in Tashkurgan or continue to Khunjerab/Panlong Ancient Road, upgrade to a two-day trip to give your body time to adapt.
📸 Photo Spot Checklist
- Baisha Lake: End of the main viewpoint boardwalk — both wide and tele shots work; morning front-light is most saturated
- Karakul Lake: East shore for Muztagh Ata reflection; side-back light gives the strongest 3D snow peak
- Subash Pass: The road bend for a "snow mountain + highway" shot — park safely
- Golden Grassland: Warm evening light, layered grass + Stone City ruins + distant mountains
- Panlong Ancient Road (detour): the famous "Today you've walked every detour, from now on life is all smooth road" sign
🎒 Day-Trip Packing List
- **Passport/ID + Border permit** (both required)
- Sunscreen + sunglasses + sun hat (extreme UV at altitude)
- Fleece/light down (cold at altitude, colder in wind)
- Oral glucose + thermos of hot water (AMS prevention)
- Snacks (naan, biscuits, chocolate — limited food at scenic spots)
- Oxygen canisters (1–2 if sensitive; available at county pharmacies)

The Pamir Plateau Is Worth Visiting Once in a Lifetime
The snow of Muztagh Ata, the blue of Baisha Lake, the smiles of the Tajik people — the vast purity of the Pamir Plateau is the most unforgettable part of any Southern Xinjiang trip. One day is tight, but enough to stay in your memory.
If you have time, strongly consider upgrading to two days — stay a night in Tashkurgan and catch the golden sunrise on the snow peak the next morning.
