Stop Believing Those Commando Check-in Guides—Blindly Rushing to Qinghai Means Paying to Suffer!

Recently seen various "3-Day Speed Run Qinghai Lake" and "Commando 800km Per Day" posts online. I've run the northwest for 15+ years and want to reach through the screen to wake you up. Qinghai's beauty is truly stunning, but its average 3000m+ altitude, hundreds of kilometers of no-man's land—it's not a place you just show up at on impulse. Many go excitedly, vomit from altitude sickness in the car on day one, get taken to unnamed ponds for ticket fees by unlicensed drivers on day two, and end up in the hospital from a cold on day three. Today I'm putting 15+ years of blood-and-tears experience here—first-timers to Qinghai, don't do these 10 things.

🚙 Veteran's Straight Talk: Which Vehicle Best "Avoids Pitfalls"?

For Qinghai, many first think of renting a sedan or booking a cheap 40-person bus tour. Listen—both choices are landmines for your trip. Qinghai's attractions are extremely far apart—4-6 hours daily in the car average, with some sections frequently under repair, crossing mountains, or on gravel. Sedans have low clearance—rough roads shake you senseless, trunks fill with two suitcases, impossible with kids and elders; bus tours stop and go, bathroom queues half an hour, forget about freedom.

This time, listen to me—for paved-road family tours, go directly with a comfortable 7-seat business van (like Buick GL8 or Trumpchi M8). Don't save this money—airline seats let your elders and kids sleep soundly on long drives, preventing backaches that ruin the mood. The van's massive trunk easily holds all luggage and warm clothes. Most importantly—leave driving to a professional driver who knows local roads. You and your family just watch blue sky, white clouds, and flocks of sheep out the window—that's real quality in-depth travel.

🗺️ Hard-Earned Itinerary—Just Follow Along

Forget those tight commando schedules. My route goes shallow to deep, balancing altitude acclimatization and the best scenery—just copy the homework!

Day 1: Xining - Riyue Mountain - Qinghai Lake Erlangjian - Chaka Salt Lake

  • Itinerary tip: Many locals open "dead-end road" shortcuts around Qinghai Lake, charging a few dozen yuan for lakeshore access—don't go! Not only easy to get stuck, but may be stopped for a second charge.
  • Road warning: Departing Xining passes Riyue Mountain, altitude rises above 3000m. Mostly good paved roads, but many curves over the mountain—the van's stability greatly reduces elders' motion sickness.
  • Veteran's advice: Never go to Chaka Salt Lake at noon—direct sun not only peels skin but kills reflections. Enter after 4:30 PM when light softens—perfect for the "Sky Mirror" sunset glow.

Day 2: Chaka - Beautiful G315 Highway - Dachaidan Emerald Lake

  • Itinerary tip: Today crosses the Qaidam Basin, passing the famous G315 wave highway. Never lie down in the middle of the road for photos—that's a main truck route, extremely dangerous!
  • Road warning: Long drive today, 400+ km, surrounded by no-man's desert. Stock road food and water in advance—the van's spacious interior becomes a mobile rest stop.
  • Veteran's advice: Dachaidan Emerald Lake has more color layers than Chaka. Don't crowd at Pool 1—take the small train deeper, Pools 6 and 7 are empty and emerald green. Phone overhead angle is stunning.

Day 3: Dachaidan - Qarhan Salt Lake - Golmud

  • Itinerary tip: Qarhan Salt Lake is massive—dozens of times Chaka's size. The salt bridge has no railings—don't step on edge salt crust for photo angles, falling is no joke.
  • Road warning: Mostly straight highway and first-class road—excellent conditions. But scenery is monotonous, drivers easily fatigued—a professional veteran driver is essential.
  • Veteran's advice: Prepare bright-colored clothes (red, yellow, pure white)—against Qarhan's industrial-style turquoise, contrast maxed—any shot is National Geographic-level industrial art.

🎒 Practical List: Bring These to Suffer Less

⚠️ Don't say I didn't warn you: Qinghai's dryness and UV are "deadly"! Temperature may be only 10-20°C, but when sun comes out, it peels you in minutes. Also—don't get excited and jump around upon arriving at altitude, don't shower or wash hair that night—a cold causing acute pulmonary edema at altitude is fatal!

  • Clothing: Hard shell (with fleece), lightweight down (Qinghai Lake nights and mornings are only a few degrees), wide-brim sun hat, sunglasses (salt lake reflection is intense—can't open eyes without them).
  • Sun protection & moisturizing: High-SPF sunscreen (SPF50+), lip balm (must bring, unisex—otherwise lips will crack), intensive moisturizing masks.
  • Essential medicine: Glucose (altitude sickness fighter), ibuprofen (headache lifesaver), motion sickness pills, cold medicine.
  • Electronics: Power bank (altitude drains batteries fast), drone (if you have one, must bring—salt lake God's-eye view is stunning).

💡 Heart-to-Heart Truths

Realistic road expectations: Northwest travel's core is "big." 4 hours daily driving is normal, many bathrooms are dry latrines (1-2 yuan fee)—prepare mentally. Don't believe "not tired at all" nonsense. Accommodation anti-scam: Chaka and Dachaidan accommodation can't compare to big cities—peak season (July-August) prices multiply and sell out. My team arranges quality hotels personally inspected for hygiene and hot water—no suffering. Realistic dining advice: Mostly beef, lamb, and noodles. After a big pan-fried lamb meal, absolutely no ice-cold drinks or watermelon—easily causes stomach turmoil and diarrhea.

📸 Don't Shoot Blindly—These Spots Are Stunning

  • Qinghai Lake lakeside road: Around 3 PM, navigate to West Ring Road near Heimahe—lake water is purest blue, background of yak herds, telephoto for beautiful storytelling.
  • Chaka Salt Lake railway: Don't squeeze at the lake edge. Follow the old railway deeper—wait for a red small train to pass, capture train and reflection in one frame—Spirited Away destiny feeling.
  • Dachaidan Emerald Lake depths: 5 PM, walk to the innermost heart-shaped lake. Stand on white salt beach, have a friend shoot from above with phone—capture green water and white salt crystals.
