You Must Visit the Northwest Sometime! Qinghai Lake Self-Driving Loop, 5-7 Day Ultimate Light-Chasing Journey

"You must visit the northwest sometime."

I posted this on social media for three years, finally cashing it in last summer. When driving along Qinghai Lake—rapeseed flower sea on the left, impossibly blue lake on the right—I knew: I came to this road late, but you still have time.

This guide is for everyone who wants to "chase light" in the northwest. From car rental to lodging, from daily routes to niche photo spots—holding nothing back.

🚗 Part 0: Before Departure—What Car? When to Go?

In Qinghai self-driving, choosing the wrong car means suffering the entire trip.

Three Vehicle Types

VehicleSuitable ForProsCons
Regular sedanXining-Qinghai Lake-Chaka short routeFuel-efficient, cheapLow clearance, Gobi rough roads scrape bottom
SUVFull routeGood clearance, spaciousSlightly higher fuel, pricier rental
7-seat vanFamily/groupComfort ceiling, driver knows roadsNot self-driving (has driver)

My advice: If only doing Qinghai Lake-Chaka-Dachaidan paved roads, SUV is sufficient. If going to Eboliang or Water Yadan, rent a 4WD SUV. With elderly/children—directly charter a van + driver, save driving fatigue for scenery.

Best Departure Time

  • Mid-July to early August: Qinghai Lake rapeseed peak bloom—golden flowers with blue water—postcard level.
  • Mid-to-late September: Fewer tourists, stable weather, richest Gobi sunset colors.
  • Avoid National Day: Oct 1-7 Qinghai Lake loop traffic jams are soul-crushing, accommodation triples.

📅 Part 1: 5-Day Route (Compact, for Limited Time)

Day 1: Xining → Kumbum Monastery → Qinghai Lake Erlangjian → Heimahe

Driving: ~260km, 4 hours

8 AM depart Xining, first stop Kumbum Monastery. As one of the six great Gelug monasteries, Kumbum's butter sculptures, murals, and appliqué embroidery are the "Three Treasures." 1.5 hours is enough—don't delay the rest.

Afternoon straight to Qinghai Lake Erlangjian Scenic Area. Erlangjian is official—well-equipped but crowded. To save money and avoid crowds, find herder openings on West Ring Road before Erlangjian (usually 20-30 yuan/person)—same lakeshore access.

Accommodation: Heimahe Town—for next morning's sunrise.

Dinner: Heimahe pan-fried lamb—Qinghai Lake area lamb truly has no gameyness.

Day 2: Heimahe Sunrise → Xiangpi Mountain → Chaka Salt Lake

Driving: ~80km, 1.5 hours

5:30 AM wake, walk to Heimahe lakeside for sunrise. The moment sun leaps from the lake—you'll feel every previous "five more minutes" was a crime.

After sunrise, depart. Cross Xiangpi Mountain (3817m)—the loop's first high-altitude pass. Get out, look at prayer flags, no strenuous activity.

Arrive at Chaka Salt Lake before 3 PM. Core principle: don't go at noon. Midday salt lake is blinding white—can't shoot reflections. After 4:30 PM when light softens, put on shoe covers, walk into shallow water—the true Sky Mirror appears.

Accommodation: Chaka Town.

Day 3: Chaka → G315 Highway → Dachaidan Emerald Lake

Driving: ~400km, 5 hours

Today is the longest drive. Taking the famous G315 Highway—that straight road through the Gobi, over-photographed on Xiaohongshu as "China's Most Beautiful Highway."

⚠️ Serious warning: Don't sit in the middle of G315 for photos! This is a main truck and tanker route—80+ km/h. By the time a driver sees you, they can't stop. For photos, use roadside hills—same view, life is 10,000x more important than the photo.

Afternoon arrive at Dachaidan Emerald Lake. Compared to Chaka, Emerald Lake has more layers—emerald green, lake blue, Tiffany blue gradient. Take the small train to the deepest Pools 6 and 7—few people, stunning views.

Accommodation: Dachaidan Town.

Day 4: Dachaidan → Nanbaxian Yadan → Return Xining (or extend to Water Yadan)

Driving: Return to Xining ~720km, 8-9 hours

Two options today:

Option A (5-day version): Morning visit nearby Nanbaxian Yadan—free wild Yadan, massive scale, few know about it. After photos, start return to Xining via Delingha-Ulan-Xining.

Option B (upgrade to 7-day): Continue west to Water Yadan and Dongtai Jinaier Lake, then return via Golmud. The extra two days are absolutely worth it.

Accommodation (5-day): Arrive Xining that evening—celebrate with hand-grabbed lamb!

📅 Part 2: 7-Day Route (In-Depth, Most Recommended)

If you can squeeze 7 days, this deep loop is strongly recommended:

DayRouteHighlight
Day 1Xining → Kumbum → Qinghai Lake → HeimaheTibetan Buddhism + Qinghai Lake sunset
Day 2Heimahe sunrise → Chaka Salt LakeQinghai Lake sunrise + Sky Mirror
Day 3Chaka → G315 → Dachaidan Emerald LakeGobi highway + Tiffany blue
Day 4Dachaidan → Nanbaxian Yadan → Water YadanWild Yadan + world's only Water Yadan
Day 5Water Yadan → Dongtai Jinaier Lake → GolmudChina's Maldives + Qarhan
Day 6Golmud → Qarhan Salt Lake → DelinghaAsia's largest salt lake + alien ruins
Day 7Delingha → Qinghai Lake north shore → XiningPristine north shore grassland

7-day total: ~2000km. Average 4-5 hours daily driving—unrushed, ample photo time at each stop.

⚠️ Part 3: 10 Life-and-Death Rules for Qinghai Self-Driving

  1. Always keep fuel above half tank: Gobi gas stations may be 200km apart—fill up at every opportunity.
  2. Download offline maps: Some Qinghai sections have no cell signal (especially Water Yadan-Golmud)—download Qinghai offline maps.
  3. Don't drive at night: Gobi highways have no streetlights—animal crossings and truck high beams are dangerous.
  4. Carry altitude sickness meds: Glucose oral solution (most effective), ibuprofen (headache lifesaver).
  5. Sunscreen is top priority: SPF50+ every 2 hours, sunglasses and hat never off during day. Qinghai's UV doesn't play.
  6. Bring double the water: Trunk should have at least one case of mineral water and one of sports drinks. Gobi dehydration is fast.
  7. Don't randomly leave the roadbed: Flat-looking salt flats may have soft mud underneath—getting stuck means hours-long tow.
  8. Respect local customs: Don't step over prayer flags, no photos inside monasteries, clockwise around stupas.
  9. Bring cash: Many pastoral gas stations and roadside shops only accept cash.
  10. Book accommodation ahead: July-August peak season—Heimahe and Dachaidan book out a week ahead.

📸 Part 4: Must-Shoot Photo Spot List

Nanbaxian Yadan1h before sunsetBacklit silhouettes, golden-red earth + black figures
Water Yadan1.5h before sunsetDrone vertical overhead of "ghost fleet"

🎒 Part 5: Packing List

  • Documents: ID, driver's license (rental essential), vehicle registration (if own car)
  • Clothing: Hard shell + fleece (morning/evening 5-8°C), light down, sun shirt, red/white dress (photos)
  • Medicine: Glucose, ibuprofen, motion sickness, cold medicine, gastrointestinal medicine
  • Gear: Sunglasses, wide-brim hat, neck gaiter (dust/wind), power bank (altitude drains fast)
  • Car: Phone mount, car charger, spare tire check
