🗺️ Route Overview

Total distance: ~900km. Average 3 hours daily driving—ample time at each stop.

Best months: Mid-July to mid-August (peak rapeseed bloom). Also good: June and September (fewer people, good weather).

📅 Day 1: Xining → Kumbum Monastery → Qinghai Lake → Heimahe

08:00 Depart Xining

Breakfast near hotel. Wumule Beef Noodles (Chengdong District Dazhong Street)—15 yuan/bowl, add meat 8 yuan. In a hurry? Buy to-go and eat in the car.

08:40-10:30 Kumbum Monastery

40 minutes from Xining, all highway. Park at scenic lot (10 yuan/car), 5-minute walk to ticket office.

2-hour essence tour:

• Butter Sculpture Hall (15 min)—butter sculptures in glass climate-controlled cases, precision is mind-boggling
• Great Golden Tile Hall (20 min)—Kumbum's core, roof used 1300 taels of gold
• Great Assembly Hall (15 min)—108-pillar hall, hundreds of monks chanting at morning prayer
• Prayer Wheel Corridor (10 min)—circumambulate the Great Golden Tile Hall, turn wheels with Tibetans

Cost: Ticket 70 yuan, guide 100 yuan/session (recommended for groups under 5)

10:30-12:30 To Qinghai Lake

Jingzang Expressway to G109 via Riyue Mountain (3520m). Riyue Mountain pass is the first 3500+ pass—Princess Wencheng statue and prayer flags. 10-minute photo stop—don't linger, high altitude.

12:30-14:00 Lunch

Daotanghe Town or near Erlangjian. Avoid scenic entrance restaurants (35 yuan noodles)—walk 1km to town for Hui noodle shops. Beef noodles 15 yuan, stir-fried noodles 20 yuan—portions 2x southern.

14:00-17:30 Qinghai Lake

Option A (budget): West Ring Road herder openings—20-30 yuan/person for lakeshore. Confirm "no additional charges."

Option B (convenient): Erlangjian scenic area—90 yuan/person. Well-equipped with boardwalks, viewing platforms, and boats to lake island.

Either way: After 4 PM is Qinghai Lake's most beautiful. Slanting sun turns the surface to crushed gold, distant snow mountains tinted pink by sunset. Stay until sundown.

18:00 Check in Heimahe

Pre-booked B&B (peak season 150-250 yuan/night). Shower first—Heimahe hot water may stop after 10 PM.

Dinner: Pan-fried lamb. Large 120-150 yuan, 4 people split = 30-40 each. With a bowl of rice—the most correct way to end a plateau day.

Evening: Walk to lakeside for stargazing. Heimahe is zero light pollution—Milky Way visible. Set up tripod, 30-second long exposure.

📅 Day 2: Heimahe Sunrise → Chaka Salt Lake

05:30-06:15 Heimahe Sunrise

5:15 wake—put on everything you have (dawn ~6°C). Walk to lakeside to claim your spot. Sun leaps from the lake—golden ripples, startled migratory birds, snow mountains in background—everyone falls silent for a few seconds.

07:00-08:30 To Chaka

Depart Heimahe, cross Xiangpi Mountain (3817m—route's highest point), 1.5 hours to Chaka. If yaks cross the road—stop and wait. They're road bosses—you have right of way but no winning chance.

09:00-13:00 Chaka Salt Lake

9 AM first wave in—avoid 10+ AM tour group peak.

Photo strategy:

• Spot: Walk deeper from entrance—fewer people further in. Where you can't see train tracks, water is calmest.
• Time: 9-11 AM is one of Chaka's best shooting windows—sun angle creates perfect reflections.
• Outfit: Red dress (classic), white dress (premium)—don't wear blue/green (blend with background).
• Shoe covers: Rental 10 yuan—recommended. Salt water crystallizes on shoes when dry—ruins them.
• No small train: Walk 15-20 minutes to core area—save 50 yuan. Elderly/children should take train.

Lunch: Chaka Town "Old Yan Grill & Noodle Shop"—lamb skewers 3 yuan each, 30 yuan per person stuffed.

14:00 Check in Chaka

Chaka accommodation is a tier better than Heimahe. Town B&Bs 100-200/night, hotels 200-400. Book ahead—peak season walk-ins are basically impossible.

📅 Day 3: Chaka → West Ring Road → Qilian

Today is the longest drive (5 hours) but also the richest scenery.

08:00-10:00 West Ring Road

From Chaka, don't take highway—take West Ring Road. This road hugs Qinghai Lake's west shore—sapphire lake on your left, green carpet grassland on your right. Every 500m you want to stop—control yourself, stop only at key sections.

Must-stops:

• 10km west of Heimahe: Road built right on the shoreline—walk down to touch the water
• Bird Island junction: Not the main road, but this section's shooting angle is superb

10:00-12:00 Gangcha

Gangcha is Haibei Prefecture's county town—Qinghai Lake's north shore largest town. The Tsangyang Gyatso Cultural Square deserves a 30-minute stop—the 6th Dalai Lama's poems carved on stone tablets, bilingual Tibetan-Chinese "That Day."

Lunch: Gangcha "Tibetan Family Clay Pot Hot Pot." Copper pot, charcoal slow-cooking—bottom glass noodles and cabbage, middle fried meatballs and crispy pork, top thin yak beef. 60 yuan per person—the most special meal of the trip.

12:00-14:30 Crossing Qilian Grassland

Gangcha to Qilian—you'll constantly want to stop. Grassland spreads on both sides, distant snow peaks, sheep herds slowly crossing the road.

Most recommended section: 30km before Qilian County—a mountain road where the rearview mirror shows the road curving beautifully across grassland—probably China's most beautiful rearview mirror view.

15:00 Arrive Qilian

Check in Qilian County hotel (150-300 yuan/night). Qilian is called "Eastern Switzerland"—small but clean, Niuxin Mountain snow peak visible looking up.

Dinner: Qilian County "Herder Family" hand-grabbed lamb. Qilian grassland free-range lamb—meat carries wild onion fragrance. 80 yuan/jin, with pepper salt and garlic—bite directly.

📅 Day 4: Zhuoer Mountain → Qilian Grassland → Menyuan

08:00-11:00 Zhuoer Mountain

Zhuoer Mountain is the trip's highlight viewpoint. Standing on the summit—

• East: Rapeseed flower fields golden and brilliant
• West: Danxia landform rust-red textures
• South: Niuxin Mountain (Amidongsuo) year-round snow
• North: Qilian grassland extending beyond sight

One frame holds green, gold, rust-red, and snow white.

Ticket: 60 yuan (includes bus to mid-mountain, then 20-minute walk to summit).

Photo: Summit viewing platform is best—but don't only shoot there. Walk 50m north to a small extension—captures Zhuoer's red body and Niuxin Mountain together.

12:00-16:00 Qilian Grassland

Lunch in Qilian County, afternoon to deep Qilian grassland.

Recommended route: From Qilian toward Ebao Town, about 40 minutes. This section has the most complete grassland—no power poles, no fences (partially), Qilian snow peaks as background.

Find a safe parking spot, walk into the grassland (confirm it's not fenced private pasture). Lie down, close your eyes—wind through grass tips, distant yak bells, your own heartbeat. When did you last hear your own heartbeat?

16:00-18:00 To Menyuan

Qilian to Menyuan ~150km, 2.5 hours. In July approaching Menyuan, roadside rapeseed patches appear, growing denser—by Qingshizui Town, hundreds of thousands of rapeseed acres spread to the horizon.

19:00 Check in Menyuan

Qingshizui Town B&B 80-150 yuan/night. Book ahead—July peak season rooms are extremely tight.

📅 Day 5: Menyuan Rapeseed → Daban Mountain → Xining

07:00-09:30 Menyuan Rapeseed

Early morning rapeseed viewing. Morning light makes gold most intense—Gangshika snow peak in background, barley fields and rapeseed creating yellow-green interwoven textures.

Best viewpoints:

• Qingshizui Town Yuanshan Viewing Platform (30 yuan/person)—high overview
• Country roads below the platform—walk into flower fields for upward shots

Note: Rapeseed is farmers' crops—walk on field ridges, don't step on flowers.

10:00-12:00 Daban Mountain

Menyuan to Xining requires crossing Daban Mountain. Look back while crossing—your last view of Qinghai's boundless golden flower sea.

Daban Mountain Tunnel is one of Asia's highest highway tunnels (3792m). After exiting, all downhill—altitude drops from 3800 to 2200, ear pressure changes.

12:00 Return to Xining

Noon arrive Xining. Mo Jia Street for a final meal—Delu yogurt, Mazhong's ga noodles, and a bowl of sweet fermentation.

Afternoon fly home. Five days isn't long, but enough to plant a plateau blue in your heart.
